Not the Devil, Not the Nun (feat. Anna Struth)

about

ABOUT THIS TRACK
I wrote the lyrics "Oh my lord, what have I done? I'm not the Devil but I'm not the Nun" first, then tried to write the rest of the song knowing that I was writing from a woman's perspective about something very primal. I attempted to write this song a few times but left it alone unfinished each time until finally, having just read Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, I found the heart of the song - in shadows and in light. Thank you Sylvia Plath.

lyrics

LYRICS
Pots and pans, intuition,
She’s got a storm brewing in her kitchen
Her thoughts turn to what’s in between
The kitchen table isn’t all it seems
She looks around and the walls close in
She drops to her knees and pleads
Oh my lord, what have I done?
I’m not the Devil but I’m not the Nun
I fall shadow and I succumb
I crave the silence but it never comes

Pots and pans, intermission
The draws are full of the past she’s hidden
Her memory serves just to hold her down
It’s in her kitchen were she’ll soon be found
She looks around and the walls close in
She drops to her knees and pleads
Oh my lord, what have I done?
I’m not the Devil but I’m not the Nun
I fall shadow and I succumb
I crave the silence but it never comes

She twists the dial and the gas turns on
She’s on her knees as she sings her song
She’s on her knees as she sings her song
Oh my lord, what have I done?
I’m not the Devil but I’m not the Nun
I fall shadow and I succumb
I crave the silence oh when will it come?

I’m not the Devil, I’m not the Nun
I crave the silence oh when will it come?
